What’s the Deal with Playing Cards?

MOTION DESIGN

BRIEF
Create a 1.5 to 2 minute explainer video that uses strong motion design and compelling storytelling techniques to establish a clear, concise, and thoughtful point of view and understanding of a topic of your choice. An explainer video is essentially an animated essay; your video should have a strong thesis statement.
PROCESS
I immediately knew I wanted to make something about playing cards because I enjoy playing card games and it is one of my main hobbies. I dove deep researching playing cards, their origin, and uses. I learned a lot about playing cards, so it was difficult trying to narrow down my research into one area of information I could share. Many of my classmates were interested in the other uses for playing cards, and so I decided that would be my main focus.

After landing on a specific area to talk about playing cards I developed my design concept. My two original concepts were a Monty Python animation and a vector shape style. I went the Monty Python like route because I saw the most potential with it. I used choppy animations with grainy collage elements, layering sound effects on top to bring in the silliness of Monty Python. I feel that this style paired perfectly with the content I was animating for. Both are playful and silly while captivating the audience.

KNOWLEDGE GAINED
I further developed my knowledge of motion design and skills, as well as my After Effects skills. I learned a variety of new animation techniques like a card flip, line animation, and a large/long zoom in. I gained familiarity using pre compositions to help me animate my video in chunks.
