Tranquility              Awaits

IMMERSIVE                                            EXPERIENCE

BRIEF
Tranquility Awaits is an immersive experience that targets the audience’s mind and how we cope with anxiety. This piece first lures the viewer in with its relaxing music, calming colors, and captivating look. As the viewer enters and starts the experience, they slowly becomeoverwhelmed by the amount of content and sound they intake. The audio and visuals build, layering on top of each other, until they are so loud and overwhelming that the view may not be able to stand it anymore. No worries, the content does come to an immediate stop, leaving the viewer thinking about how they can resolve their anxieties.

PROCESS
I worked with Madeline Beattie on this project and believe it or not, we were inspired by an article discussing the top cities in America with the highest rat infestation. We played around with the concept of rat infestation and ended up taking that idea further by abstracting it into the infestation of the mind. Of course, this lead us to experiencing anxiety, how it makes people feel by taking over the mind, and how can we take action to resolve this.

Tranquility Awaits starts calm and quiet representing a peaceful mind. We brought in various elements including visuals projected on a pedestal and audio speaking different thoughts brought about by anxiety. We slowly built these elements on top of each other to represent how a mind can be filled with an abundance of anxious thoughts until you just can’t stand it anymore. This being the climax of the experience, with all the visuals layered on top of each other, and each audio piece playing at the same time at a high volume. There is a sudden stop to all the noise and visuals, leaving the view in the dark with a few lines of type encouraging them to take action upon their anxieties and not let those thoughts take over their day-to-day life.

Maddie and I constructed this experience by creating audio and visuals with After Effects, assembling the space with a projector and curtain from the ceiling, aligning it all properly with a pedestal, as well as developing a small interface for the user to interact with. Before the final, we created a prototype to help us better construct our space and understand what elements did and did not work.

KNOWLEDGE GAINED
This project further developed my skills in After Effects. I developed an understanding of how to design and build for a physical space. I also developed skills in creating an interface with a MakeyMakey.
