The Laws of Simplicity
Book Redesign
PUBLICATION DESIGN

BRIEF
I read the book The Laws of Simplicity by John Maeda, as it relates to simple and modern design. This book shares ten laws of simplicity concerning design, business, and technology, with the overall message that “simplicity equals sanity.” After becoming familiar with the text, I was given a project to redesign it.

PROCESS
I set up an asymmetric grid system to create a rhythmic pattern of pages throughout the book. To keep my layouts cohesive, I referenced the principles of Gestalt and used style sheets when designing. I exaggerated the graphics and law numbers, placing them in an unconventional way where some of the body text is covered. I also used full pages of black to emphasize quotes to keep the viewer engaged and to create visual interest.
KNOWLEDGE GAINED
I furthered my skills in InDesign, and developed my understanding of style sheets. I also advanced my understanding of pacing, continuity, and visual hierarchy.
