Science Writers Magazine Summer/Fall 2023 Issue

PUBLICATION DESIGN

This project was accomplished during an internship at Spark Creative Design, in Sacramento, California. The client was the National Association of Science Writers (NASW), an organization of science journalists and reporters who aim to improve the craft of science journalism. NASW releases an issue of their magazine twice a year for their members. Each issue has an overall design theme, this issue’s theme was books.

My role included book photography. As a sketching method, I went to a public library and grabbed stacks of books to photograph in various ways. After practicing with library books, I photogrpahed the final shots with books written by members of NASW. Along with this, I gave an artistic style to my photos by increasing the saturation and vibrancy as a way to engage the viewers. I was also repsonsible for designing a couple of article layouts using InDesign and artwork relating to specific articles. This included a handmade collage and a variety of rotoscoped images. I gained a gread deal of new experiences and knowledge including working with a client, print prep, and InDesign style sheets.
