POSTER DESIGN

BRIEF
Michigan has an abundance of varying festivals for communities to enjoy. This project was created to celebrate the annual Michigan Challenge Balloonfest in Howell, Michigan. This early summer event celebrates hot air balloons through balloon rides, fly-ins, races, nighttime balloon glow, and other hot air balloon festivities. The event also offers other kinds of fun for the family, including a carnival, food, and fireworks.
AUDIENCE
Families of all ages and generations in the Howell, Michigan area
PROCESS
This process started with ideating through thumbnail sketching and collaging. I made 30 different collages exploring the possibilities of what a hot air balloon might look like and how it could be represented. After a series of critiques and narrowing down my collages, I went in the direction of collage number 23, where I explored the perspective of hot air balloons from the ground. My peers perceived the collage as the top of the balloons; I thought that was more interesting and ran with it.
This set of posters celebrates the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest through bright colors and varying patterns representing the vibrancy and artfulness of hot air balloons and summer fun, as well as through my use of playful language. I also provided a unique perspective of the balloons from the top, which people don’t typically see. Layering the type underneath the balloons helps to give them depth, as well as playing with their scale. The three posters work together to function properly, as I spread all the content across each one, creating a longer landscape view, like a sky full of hot air balloons.
KNOWLEDGE GAINED
Creating this project furthered my understanding of composition, scale, and hierarchy, as well as my understanding of color usage. I further developed my skills in Illustrator and and deepened my understanding of working with a series.
